Thoughts on the complexities of life, love and bananas

Unattainable

I begin this post with a sincere apology to my loyal readers, specifically Lyra, who checks this daily, and M, who nearly does. I know I said it would only be a week or so, but I’ve been so busy in the last month. First Hawai’i, then some academic competitions, and then the last week I’ve just been trying to catch up. I have come to 2 conclusions in the last 7 days: 1) Reality should be outlawed, and 2) The world should just not start until 9 in the morning. Let me know if you agree!

Yesterday, my friend Lyra and I were talking about something that I’m pretty sure most girls talk about: guys, be they a) real guys we know (e.g. classmates at school), b) real guys we don’t know (e.g. celebrities), or c) imaginary guys (e.g. movie/TV/book characters). For us, its mostly C. In fact, we spent a good 30 minutes discussing the relative merits of and dividing up characters. We started with the ones we’d divided up before. “Mine” include Derek Morgan and Dr. Spencer Reid, both from “Criminal Minds,” and Prince Caspian from the Chronicles of Narnia. Some of “hers” were Aaron Hotchner (“Criminal Minds”), Niles Crane (“Frasier”), and Will from The Golden Compass. We realized that we’d never agree on who got Gerard Butler (Erik from Phantom of the Opera), so we’re sharing him.

From there, our conversation went on to claiming various book characters and such, but it got me thinking – why do preteen and teen girls tend to be so fascinated with what they cannot have? From celebrity obsessions to crushes on teachers — what is it that draws us toward that which can never be ours? There are some girls who always just happen to fall for gay guys. It’s not their fault; you can’t control who you fall for (me, I got lucky and fell for a guy who was cute, awesome, and available). For example, did you know that when you’re in a relationship, you put out a certain chemical that makes you more attractive to others? Does that not make sense? It seems so pointless, so crazy, so against nature, and yet it happens anyway. I don’t know why.

Oh, and don’t worry, M. Just because I’m claiming various book characters doesn’t mean I’m abandoning you. I’d choose you over them any day. =D

Peace, love, and happiness to you,

Stargrl
